Fixed vs Floating-Rate Personal Loan
Most borrowers compare personal loans by looking at the percentage rate and EMI. One more detail matters: is the rate fixed for the loan tenure, or can it change with a benchmark? The answer affects future EMIs or tenure, total interest and prepayment charges.
Most unsecured personal loans in India are commonly structured at fixed rates, but borrowers should verify the documents rather than assume. A product name or an advertisement does not determine the legal rate type; the sanction letter, Key Facts Statement and agreement do.
How a fixed-rate personal loan works
A fixed rate generally remains unchanged for the agreed tenure, subject to the contract. This produces predictable repayment. The borrower knows the scheduled EMI and can plan monthly cash flow without tracking benchmark movements.
Predictability does not mean the total cost is automatically lower. A fixed rate may begin above a floating offer because the lender absorbs the risk of future rate movements. Fixed-rate loans can also carry part-payment or foreclosure charges according to the lender's disclosed policy and applicable regulation.
How a floating-rate personal loan works
A floating rate is linked to a benchmark plus a spread. If the benchmark changes, the effective rate can rise or fall. The lender may adjust the EMI, the remaining tenure or both, as permitted and disclosed. Borrowers should ask how frequently the rate resets and where the benchmark is published.
A falling benchmark can reduce interest, but an increase can make repayment more expensive or longer. Do not select floating only because the starting rate is lower. Test whether the household budget could absorb a higher EMI.
Prepayment rules from 2026
RBI's prepayment directions apply to loans sanctioned or renewed on or after January 1, 2026. A regulated lender cannot levy prepayment charges on a floating-rate loan to an individual for a non-business purpose. The prohibition applies regardless of the source used for prepayment and without a charge-based lock-in.
This does not make every personal loan free to foreclose. A fixed-rate personal loan may still have charges under the lender's policy and documents. This distinction is especially important because fixed rates are common in personal lending. Read more about Personal Loan Foreclosure Charges in 2026.
Which rate type may suit you?
A fixed rate may suit a borrower who values certainty, has a tightly planned monthly budget or expects to hold the loan for the full tenure. A floating rate may appeal to someone comfortable with rate movement, expecting to prepay aggressively or seeking potential benefit from falling benchmarks.
The decision should not be based on a forecast alone. Interest-rate predictions can be wrong. Questions to ask the lender
Ask whether the loan is legally fixed or floating, not merely whether the EMI is described as fixed. For a floating loan, identify the benchmark, current spread, reset date and process when rates change. Confirm whether the spread can change and under what conditions.
For a fixed loan, ask about foreclosure percentage, lock-in, part-payment limits and GST on charges. For both, check processing fees, net disbursal, penal charges and repayment schedule in the KFS.
Use a rate-change stress test
Before choosing floating, calculate the repayment impact if the rate increases by one or two percentage points. A calculator can illustrate the possible EMI or tenure change, although the lender's actual reset method governs the loan.
Before choosing fixed, estimate the likely cost of early closure. If a bonus or asset sale could allow repayment in a year, a slightly lower advertised fixed rate may be less valuable after adding the foreclosure fee.
Fixed provides certainty; floating provides movement and, for qualifying 2026 personal-purpose loans, stronger prepayment flexibility. The better option is the one whose risk and terms match the borrower's cash flow.
Frequently asked questions
Are personal loans fixed or floating?
Many are fixed, but products vary. Check the KFS and agreement for the actual rate type.
Can the EMI change on a floating loan?
Yes. Depending on the agreement, a rate reset may change the EMI, tenure or both.
Is foreclosure free on a fixed-rate personal loan?
Not automatically. Disclosed lender charges may apply under the agreement and applicable rules.
